No wonder Disneyland is regarded as the
happiest place on earth. It has more than its fair share of the indicators
researchers have identified as helping a person lead a fulfilling, satisfying
and happy life. After recently
reading an article on the pursuit
of happiness I came to the conclusion that if I were to live in Disneyland
then I could potentially be in a perpetual state of happiness.
Alas I do live in the real world so instead
I will take the principles about happiness that I witnessed in this delightful
place and apply them to my life anyway.
Surround
yourself with happy people.
From the moment we purchased our tickets we
were surrounded by workers who obviously loved their job, excited children,
patient crowds and families loving the time they were spending together. You can’t get much happier than that.
Smile
Oh Mickey how I love your smile. Just looking at you makes
me smile.
Cultivate
resilience – ie Fall seven times and stand up eight.
Goofy is my hero in this regard. He is the silliest and clumsiest of
characters yet keeps going no matter what and all with a smile on his face.
Notice
all the good things in your life and appreciate simple pleasures
From Mickey shaped balloons, to clean
pavements, to getting high 4’d each morning as we walked in the gates – there
were endless simple pleasures and good things to experience within the gates of
Dland.

Think
yourself happy
How can you not in a place like this??
Pursue
activities that allow you to lose track of time
Time, what time….? The only time we worried
about time was when we had to get to a ride in order to use our fast pass.
Have
face to face contact with people and unplug from technology
Although we had access to the Internet and
had a cell phone at our disposal we did become rather ‘low tech’ on our holiday
to Disneyland. Our focus was on each other and making the most of the here and now.
Look
on the bright side
Yep it was hot, yep the lines were long and
the park was crowded – but we were at Disneyland. To minimize our wait time in line we used our Fast Passes
effectively; we brought our own lunches and worked our way strategically around
the park. To pass the time we
chatted to each other and those around us. To stay cool we stood in the shade and went on the water
rides.
Listen
to upbeat music
Music is played constantly in Disneyland
within the park itself as well as its surrounds. The music is joyful and lovely and you can’t help but be
seduced by it.
Exercise
I think we walked at least 10 miles every
day… Is that exercise enough?
Go
outside
The only time we were inside was when we
were on a ride or watching a show.
The rest of the time we were outside enjoying the immaculate gardens,
and being blown away by the props and sets the artists (who I think have the
best job in the world) have made in order to make Dland a true wonderland.
Get
plenty of sleep
This is one thing we didn’t do really well
– we were having too much fun!!!
Laugh Out Loud
Yep – its not hard to do here….
